Sherry Dubin has more than 30 years of classroom experience in both public and private schools and has taught early childhood through fifth grade students. Before coming to The Shlenker School in 1988 she taught in the Galena Park Independent School District and at Oakwood Elementary, a private school in North Hollywood, California. Sherry has taught Toddlers, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten at Shlenker and is currently working as the Literacy Coordinator. As the Literacy Coordinator, Sherry supports reading instruction for students in Kindergarten through Fifth grade, works in The Shlenker Early Childhood program to support literacy development, and is the dyslexia specialist. Sherry is also a Certified Academic Language Therapist.
Sherry also maintains the Literacy Lab, a resource room with materials available for teachers that will enhance their curriculum and reading instruction. In addition, for the past 18 years Sherry has been associated with the School Literacy and Culture Project in Rice University's Center for Education. She has served as a mentor, program facilitator, and board member for this project. She has co-facilitated teacher seminars at a public school involved in this training as well as facilitating seminars for the Teach for America program. For many years Sherry taught in the Summer Creative Writing Camp, hosted by the School Literacy and Culture Project and Writers in the Schools, before serving in her current position as site supervisor for this project. Sherry's commitment to children and her passion for literacy development are evident in her interactions with students.
