Associate Rabbi

Rabbi Mark Miller

Rabbi Mark J. Miller grew up in Colorado, where his parents instilled in him a deep sense of pride in Israel and Judaism. After graduating from Northwestern University with degrees in history and psychology, he spent 11 years as a Jewish Camp Director – first with the Maurice B. Shwayder Camp of Congregation Emanuel in Colorado, and then with the Wilshire Boulevard Temple Camps in Malibu, California.

Prior to his ordination at Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in 2007, Rabbi Miller was involved with many organizations in the Jewish community. He was Chair of the Alumni Board for Livnot U’Lehibanot, a work-study-travel program for young adults in Israel, and he served on the Board of Seeking Common Ground, an organization which brings together Israeli, Palestinian, and American youth for intercultural awareness programs.

Since arriving at Congregation Beth Israel with his wife, Rachel Ann, and two young boys, Mori and Abraham, Rabbi Miller has focused his energy in the areas of Social Justice, Israel, community building, worship, and life-long education. He also has been involved with a number of agencies throughout Houston, including CanCare, SEARCH, AIPAC, and the Holocaust Museum Houston. He currently serves on the executive board of the Houston Rabbinical Association, and as the co-chair of The Metropolitan Organization's clergy caucus.

Away from the synagogue, Rabbi Miller enjoys taking his kids swimming, playing guitar, and waiting for the next season of "Top Chef.”
