Elementary - Curriculum

The Shlenker School is recognized as one of Houston's finest schools. Each year, new projects and initiatives are introduced that reflect our commitment to academic excellence.

  • Technology is integrated into the curriculum and reinforced in the school's technology lab where students are introduced to keyboarding, and current educational software and applications. In the classroom, teachers involve students by extending learning opportunities through the use of laptop computers for special writing assignments and projects.
  • Our innovative math curriculum emphasizes the development of higher-level thinking skills, problem-solving, and analytical skills. In addition, students are introduced to new math concepts with manipulatives and targeted practice exercises. All are key components of a good math program.
  • Our students are immersed in language arts throughout the day. Our balanced literacy program exposes students to fiction and non-fiction literature; multiple opportunities to write poetry and prose; anda storytelling project which encourages students to write and present stories to audiences.
  • Our students investigate and experience a variety of scientific concepts in our state-of-the-art science lab. The classroom teacher supports hands-on learning in the lab by extending the unit in the classroom.
  • Our fine arts curriculum inspires students' imaginations and helps them to discover their own "inner artist." Through the study of artists and their lives, students produce unique works of art using the artists' techniques.
  • The integration of Jewish studies into literature, history, and creative writing is an integral part of the curriculum. This strengthens students' commitment to their studies of Judaism, prayer, Hebrew and Torah.
  • The music program focuses on a broad background of musical concepts and encourages an appreciation and a love of music. Our curriculum emphasizes multi-cultural awareness, development of singing, movement, music reading activities and the study of a variety of musical genres.
  • Teachers prepare students to become responsible, thoughtful, participating citizens through an interactive social studies curriculum. Students participate in hands-on geography lessons to learn more about their world. Our program also emphasizes history, cultures and diversity.
  • Our daily physical education classes provide challenges to promote healthy attitudes toward physical fitness. Our outstanding facilities help to promote individual activities and team sports.
  • The Shlenker library contains an extensive collection of fiction and non-fiction books. Our librarian gives weekly book talks for the students to enjoy when they visit the library to check out books.
