The Student Senate, advised by teachers Lisa Sachs and Hilary Kamin, is the student organization designed to reflect the ideals of democracy and leadership. Two student representatives are elected from each class (one representative in first grade) to represent the class on the Senate. Officers in fourth or fifth grade are elected by representatives.
The Student Senate is the venue for organizing many tikkun olam projects, such as “Pennies for Patients,” donations to the Houston Food Bank and winter coat collections for Braes Interfaith Ministries. The students choose projects and then design, publicize and execute such activities as food drives, recycling drives, and so on. The representatives will also determine the distribution of the school-wide tzedakah funds as well as the funds they raised from their own fund-raising activities. These activities include bake sales and dollar free-dress days.
