Carly Katz

Carly Katz graduated from The Shlenker School in 2017 and is currently a student at the University of Texas.

How did Shlenker prepare you for the next steps in your education and beyond?

Shlenker prepared me for what came next by helping me build confidence, self-awareness, and balance. Leading morning exercises, Torah services, and classroom presentations taught me to speak comfortably and lead with purpose. Most importantly, my Shlenker education instilled in me the drive to approach everything I do with passion, professionalism, and meaning.

What teachers, programs, or traditions had the biggest impact on you as a student?

It was the extraordinary teachers and unique programs that made Shlenker so special and created such a personal learning experience. Whether reading in Ms. Diskin’s loft, bonding over brownies with Ms. Levy, or feeling the constant support from everyone on campus, I formed lasting connections with many Shlenker faculty and staff. Experiential learning—volunteering at Seven Acres or visiting Austin, San Antonio, and Camp Allen—helped me grow individually and connect deeply with classmates. From the science fair and Spelling Bee to leading Good Morning Shlenker and Torah services, I developed leadership skills and a strong sense of pride in my Shlenker and Jewish communities.

What values or lessons from Shlenker have stayed with you into adulthood?

The lessons I learned at Shlenker continue to guide me through college and adulthood. The value of chesed—loving kindness—and the Jewish teachings woven into our days influence how I live and lead. I still remember linking arms during Kabbalat Shabbat, singing “Mitzvah Goreret Mitzvah”—a reminder that one good deed leads to another. That simple truth has shaped who I am today.

What do you think makes the Shlenker experience unique compared to other schools?

Shlenker was truly the perfect fit for my elementary years. It was a place where I was academically challenged, emotionally supported, and encouraged to embrace my Jewish identity. Looking back, attending Shlenker was one of the greatest gifts my parents gave me. From exploring creativity and community to forming lifelong friendships, I wouldn’t change my Shlenker experience for anything.
