Laurie Levy, a beloved third grade teacher at The Shlenker School for nearly four decades, is dedicated to inspiring young learners through academics, Jewish values, and her “row your own boat” philosophy.

What first drew you to teach at The Shlenker School, and what makes you stay?

Shlenker welcomed my son with open arms during a difficult time in our lives, and the comfort and gratitude I felt then has never left me. After substituting for a short period, I accepted a full-time role and, 38 years later, I still feel the same joy and purpose that first brought me here.

Can you share a moment in the classroom that captures what makes teaching at Shlenker so meaningful for you?

One of my former students carried my “row your own boat across Levy Lake” philosophy all the way to MIT and credited it as life-changing in a published book honoring Texas teachers. Moments like that remind me of the lasting impact of teaching and inspire me to keep expecting my students to row their own boats.

The joy and curiosity of my students motivate me to keep learning, while parents provide essential partnership through open communication. My colleagues create a true sense of belonging—sharing ideas, encouragement, and even simple smiles that make Shlenker feel like family.
