Counseling & Family Services

Supporting the Whole Child at The Shlenker School

At The Shlenker School, we believe that emotional well-being and strong relationships are essential to student success. Our full-time Director of Counseling and Family Services plays an integral role in supporting the social, emotional, and developmental needs of our students and families in both Early Childhood and Elementary School.

Student Support

Shlenker students have regular and easy access to our counselor, whether through individual meetings, small group sessions, classroom visits, or grade-level workshops. Support can be short-term—such as a single check-in—or ongoing, depending on each child’s needs. Students work with the counselor to build essential life skills such as:

  • Friendship and peer relationships
  • Conflict resolution
  • Positive self-esteem and resilience
  • Leadership and goal setting
  • Problem-solving and emotional regulation

Social-Emotional Learning in the Classroom

The Director of Counseling and Family Services partners with teachers to integrate our robust social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum into daily classroom life.

Age-appropriate lessons are delivered throughout the year, with a focus on values such as kindness, empathy, respect, listening, and self-advocacy. This ongoing instruction reinforces our commitment to nurturing compassionate, confident learners.

Family Services and Parent Education

We are proud to offer year-round support for parents and caregivers, including:

  • Parent education programs on child development and practical strategies
  • Guidance on supporting students through social, emotional, and academic challenges
  • Resources and referrals, when needed

Through this multifaceted approach, The Shlenker School’s Counseling and Family Services department empowers students and families alike—strengthening the foundation for lifelong learning and emotional wellness.
